An Introduction to the Roth 401k

Retirement done right.  Or is it?  You can pay now and save later with a Roth 401k.  The new Roth 401k retirement plan is basically a traditional 401k that is not bound by income thresholds, and is supplemented with the Roth IRA benefit of tax-free growth and withdrawals.

•Roth 401k plans are now effective as of January 1, 2006, and will allow you to contribute after-tax earnings into an employer 401k.  The contributions you make will grow tax-free, forever.  When you make withdrawals from a Roth 401k, you will owe no tax.  None.

•Roth 401k plans are now permanent.

•Employees will be able to contribute after-tax dollars to the Roth 401k. The money will be held in a separate account from contributions to your regular 401k. You decide what percentage of your retirement plan contributions go to either account.

•You'll be able to make the maximum contribution allowable under 401k rules. The 2006 401k contribution limits allow employees less than age 50 to sock away up to $15,000 -- $20,000 for employees age 50 or older.

•For those who want to save after-tax money, this is a much quicker route than saving in the Roth IRA, which has contribution limits of $4,000 for those less than age 50 and $5,000 for those age 50 and above in 2006. If you have a Roth IRA, or plan to open one, you can still contribute the maximum allowable to that account in addition to your Roth 401k contributions.

•If your company provides a matching contribution, it will be pretax money and will go only into the regular 401k account.

•The Roth 401k is open to all employees who qualify for the regular 401k. This is a boon to higher-paid employees who may be excluded from having a Roth IRA account because of its income limitations.

•Contributions are irrevocable. Once the money goes into the account, it falls under all of the IRS rules and penalties for 401k accounts; you can't change your mind and have it switched over to your regular 401k.

•Money can be withdrawn tax- and penalty-free as long as you're at least age 59½ and have held the account for at least five years.

•The Roth 401k has the same distribution requirements as the 401k. You'll need to begin taking minimum distributions by the time you reach age 70½. This contrasts with the Roth IRA, which has no distribution requirements.

•You can roll over your Roth 401k contributions to a Roth IRA when you retire or if your employment is terminated.

•Section 403b Plans are eligible. While the new law specifically refers to 401k plans, 403b plans are also a go.

Is a Roth 401k right for your retirement? You make the choice.

  • Big Squeeze on Ivy League Endowments

FOR YEARS, TOP UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENTS at Harvard, Yale and Princeton were the envy of the investment world, thanks to the outsized returns they generated from significant investments in nontraditional assets such as private equity, real estate, hedge funds and commodities, and low exposure to U.S. stocks and bonds.

Now that widely imitated asset- allocation strategy, dubbed the Yale model because of the enormous success of the Yale endowment under the 24-year leadership of David Swensen, is facing its sternest test amid the bear market of the past 12 months. Harvard and Princeton are assuming ...

  • 6 Patriotic Summer Trips for Less (Deal of the Day)

With more Americans putting their money away in savings accounts, it seems like a fitting time to remember that you don’t have to spend a lot to honor your country – even while on vacation.

Many hotels near patriotic sites have rolled back their prices to draw out tourists who might be setting aside less money for leisure in the midst of the recession. As the American wallet tightened, these businesses did not have much choice. Consumer confidence took a step back in June and remains at a level economists consider unhealthy -- and while Americans are spending, their dollars are no...

  • Is a Book the New Business Card?

Can you, a newly minted entrepreneur, get a jump on the competition by self-publishing a book? Yes, you can! Or so claims Stacey Hanke, consultant and author of the self-published how-to book Yes You Can!

Last year Hanke was looking for a way to stand out from the mob of other consultants competing to serve as business communication advisers. So she spent nine months writing and a total of $3,000 to publish the 165-page book—and bought 500 copies so she could hand them out to potential clients. Hanke, 39, says the book “opened doors,” and boosted her business and requests fo...

  • That's America: 10 Stocks Launched by Immigrants (On the Street)

America may be the great melting pot, but it hasn't always fully embraced the immigrants who have arrived on its shores and helped build its foundations. For years, there have been heated debates over everything from how many visas the government should issue to whether newcomers to America are stealing jobs and lowering wages for U.S. citizens.

Indeed, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum rose to national prominence partly on his support for building a barrier along the border with Mexico. On the other side of the debate, the Obama administration has pledged to make creating a path for ...

At least one segment of the battered U.S. vehicle-making industry got a massive boost Wednesday when heavy truck maker Oshkosh (OSK) won a $1.06 billion defense contract for armored trucks, driving shares up 25% in midday Wednesday trading.

Under the contract, Oshkosh will make MRAP All Terrain Vehicles (M-ATV) that are reinforced against explosions from mines and roadside bombs, like the ones commonly used against American troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. • Tax Breaks for Helping a Struggling Relative (The Tax Guy)

These days, the odds of having a relative that is struggling with debt or out of work are unfortunately pretty high. But if you can afford to help one of those relatives out financially, you may be entitled to some tax breaks that help you out.

Here's the first of a two-part series on how you can extend some generosity to family members and get a little something back from Uncle Sam for doing so.

    Claim Personal Exemption Deduction

The most obvious break is if you're able to claim a relative as your tax-return dependent. By doing so, you can bag a personal exemption deduction, which for 2009 i...

  • 5 Stock Bargains, Based on Sales (Screens)

A small pay increase or cut for a worker can make an extreme difference in the amount of pocket money left each month after the bills are paid. Earnings plunged 39%.

  • Waning Confidence Weighs on ETFs (Daily ETF Wrap-Up)

Receding consumer confidence took a toll on stocks Tuesday. Weak numbers from key retailers such as Wal-Mart (WMT) and Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) also weighed on indexes. Oil prices dropped sharply, but managed to stay above $70 a barrel, minimizing the slide in energy stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Index lost 82 points to finish at 8448. Should a broker be able to advise you on your 401(k)? That’s the ongoing tussle among some Washington lawmakers as they debate how to reform the $2.7 trillion 401(k) industry. After 401(k) investors lost billions in last year’s downturn, the Department of Labor, which regulates retirement plans, is looking into ways to give 401(k) recipients more access to investment advice.
