Roth 401(k) plans are good for all taxpayers
First published: Wednesday, January 18, 2006
Your recent article about the Roth 401(k) option now available to employer plans is almost "spot on."
As a CPA and manager of retirement plans, however, I'm growing quite weary with the position that if you will be in a lower tax bracket in retirement, you may benefit from pre-tax contributions.
With a pre-tax contribution, your taxes are deferred on your contribution and investment growth. This means that eventually you will pay income taxes on every penny you withdraw.
In contrast, under a Roth, the only income tax you pay is on your contribution to the plan. All growth, whether dividends, interest, or unrealized gains, are withdrawn tax free.
You better not only be in a lower tax bracket in retirement to make pre-tax contributions a better deal -- you better be in a nonexistent tax bracket.
